Operations Engineer

Small, profitable, fast-growing Internet company seeks an Operations Engineer for a leadership role in managing systems and operations. Our six-year old company has developed a leading-edge hosted mapping platform called Pushpin. We are experiencing considerable growth, and our product has been recognized by our customers and the technology press as a leading web mapping platform. We are looking for an experienced, motivated Operations Engineer to join our team in our downtown L.A. office.

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring ongoing reliability and proactively increasing capacity in our rapidly growing data/operations center, introducing new hardware and software systems to our stack of mapping and location based services, and introducing continuous performance improvement in our existing services. This is a hands-on position involving coordination with existing team members, communicating updates, and documenting the new and existing infrastructure.

Job Responsibilities will include:

- Maintaining and upgrading large number of Linux servers and introducing new servers and multi-terabyte storage arrays to the environment
- Cooperating with team on release management, overseeing migration of services from development to staging to production
- Developing creative solutions to accommodate rapid growth in our subscriber base and our data services offerings, through the addition of new capacity and services
- Systems monitoring: proactively identify and addressing potential performance issues
- Capacity planning: collect and use performance data to effectively increase capacity of our various services
- Documenting operational aspects of a rapidly-changing production environment
- Providing on-call support after normal business hours
- Making recommendations on hardware purchases

Skills and qualifications required are:

- Minimum 5 years experience working in a high capacity, mission critical web hosting/serving environment
- Experience working with very large dynamic databases and filesystems
- Strong systems analysis skills and proven troubleshooting ability
- UNIX shell scripting
- SQL scripting
- Experience in the operation, setup and support of very large relational databases
- Solid understanding of networking technology including UDP, TCP/IP
- Experience working with load balancers, switches, routers, and other networking equipment
- Large scale storage experience (SAN, RAID, etc.), and backup/recovery management
- Understanding of internet standard protocols such as HTTP, DNS, FTP, SSH, HTML, XML, JDBC, SNMP
- Experience with Cisco IOS 12.x
- Experience with routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, E/IGRP
- Ability to lift 40+ pounds

The following skills would be a plus

- Experience in software development with Java or similar
- Experience with core GIS concepts and geospatial platforms
- Experience with a variety of other services such as apache2, tomcat, postgresql, mysql, memcached, named/djbdns and exim4/qmail/postfix
- Adminsitration of PostgreSQL databases
- Experience with Debian, OpenBSD (RedHat OK)

This is a fulltime salaried position in our Los Angeles office.

Some travel may be required as we set up new datacenters although frequent travel is not anticipated.
